Dear Prospective Resident:

As this year’s Chief Residents, we would like to introduce you to the Medical College of Georgia’s (MCG) Family and Community Medicine Residency Program at Augusta University. Established in 1973, the program has graduated over 300 family physicians who practice throughout the nation, with a majority of graduates staying in Georgia and the Southeastern United States. One in 5 Georgia physicians graduated from MCG. There is a strong emphasis on primary care at MCG which has the 8thlargest medical school enrollment in the nation with 40% of graduates currently practicing in primary care.

MCG, which is Georgia’s only public medical school, the 3rdoldest medical school in the Southeast, and the 13tholdest in the nation, works to optimize health care in Georgia and beyond through education, discovery, and service.

MCG is one of ten colleges at Augusta University, which is one of only four public comprehensive research institutions in the state. The College continues to lay the groundwork for breakthroughs in biomedical research. Many advances in the study of medicine were first discovered within these storied halls, including research that eventually lead to the development of propranolol, the first hysterectomy performed in the United States, and one of the first documented cases of Sickle Cell Disease.

Family and Community Medicine residents have access to a variety of clinical settings, including one-on-one training at the area’s largest community hospital and in an academic medical center with a thriving Family and Community Medicine Center that has been recognized nationally as a Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home. Educational affiliations between our university’s teaching hospital and community-based clinical venues allow residents access to a diverse group of educational environments. There truly is something for everyone.

With all that the program has to offer, we believe that the greatest commodity is the exceptional faculty, fellow residents, and staff who pride themselves in learning and teaching the art and science of Family and Community Medicine. The Family and Community Medicine Residency Program is dedicated to both individualizing your experience based on career goals and interests as well as providing a strong foundation with the essential skills and tools necessary to begin a successful and rewarding career in Family and Community Medicine. We are excited that you are interested in the Family and Community Medicine Residency Program and opportunities the discipline has to offer. We look forward to meeting you and hope you consider joining ourfamily.
