Application Requirements

Primary & Secondary Applications

MCG participates in the American Medical College Application Service or (AMCASAmerican Medical College Application Service), a centralized application service administered by the AAMCAssociation of American Colleges. Applications for the Medical College of Georgia's Class of 2029 officially open through AMCAS on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 and submission begins on May 28, 2024.

Applications will be processed in the AMCAS office then forwarded to the medical school(s) of the applicant’s choice. Upon receipt of the student’s application from AMCAS, MCG will forward an application supplement (secondary application) to the applicants approved for further consideration. MCG does not charge an additional application fee in addition to the AMCAS fee. MCG will download all letters of recommendation from AMCAS.

AMCAS applications for admission are available on the AAMC’s website. This website provides application instructions and more information regarding the application process. The new AMCAS experience type Social Justice/Advocacy is not a requirement for MCG admissions consideration.

Prerequisite Courses

Biology

one academic year of General Biology or Zoology with lab (2 semesters). If a student places out of general biology using AP credit and chooses to use the AP credit and not take a general biology course in college, the student must substitute one academic year of advanced Biology courses.  Students must complete the laboratory requirement in college.

Chemistry

one academic year of Chemistry during college. Of the year, one semester must be Organic Chemistry and one semester must be Biochemistry. AP credit may NOT be used to place out of this requirement.

Physics

one academic year of Physics with 2 semesters of lab. AP credit may be used to place out of this requirement.

English

one academic year of English. English, English-based Composition, Writing, Literature, or Communication are acceptable; Humanities courses may be used to meet one semester of this requirement. AP credit may be used to place out of this requirement.

Statistics

one semester of Probability, Statistics, Biostatistics, or equivalent. Statistics, Probability or Biostatistics courses that have a STAT or MATH course number will automatically meet this requirement. Other courses that have a different prefix must be approved as equivalent by the undergraduate institution where the course was taken through the Pre-Med or Pre-Health advisor. If such an advisor is not available, the approval may be granted by any Math or Science chair at the institution. AP credit may be used to place out of this requirement.

Notes Regarding Prerequisites

  • One academic year is equal to two semesters, three quarters, or one semester and two quarters.
  • Advanced Placement (AP) credits, as outlined above, may be used for non-biology and non-chemistry courses, if they are accepted by the college/university that the applicant attended, and the credits appear on the official transcript.
  • Online coursework is acceptable from a regionally accredited institution. It must appear on the official transcript.
  • Letter grades are preferred. Pass/Fail is acceptable if the coursework was completed at a regionally accredited institution.
  • Students must have completed, or be enrolled in, all prerequisite courses by January of the planned matriculation year. Special permission may be granted on a case-by-case basis by the Office of Admissions to complete the courses in a spring or summer semester, ending no later than July of the planned matriculation year.

Additional Coursework Information

  • International applicants, as well as U.S. citizens, must have completed at least the last two years of their undergraduate or graduate education in a regionally accredited* U.S. or Canadian institution.
  • All non-U.S. coursework must be evaluated by Josef A. Silny & Associates, a company that offers foreign credential evaluation and translation. You should have a University and Post-secondary Course-by-Course evaluation completed and sent directly from the Silny office to the MCG Office of Admissions for review. Please be sure that your evaluation includes the U.S. equivalency of the degree you earned at your international university.
  • Applicants enrolled in a graduate-degree program must complete all requirements of their graduate degree prior to enrolling in medical school.

*Accredited by the appropriate regional agency for colleges and schools, i.e., the equivalent of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.  Check out the Council for Higher Education Accreditation for more information.

  • 2 sections (video and typed response).
  • 14 scenarios (9 video-based and 6 word-based).
  • First section, video responses: 2 word-based and 4 video-based scenarios. For each scenario, 2 open-ended questions are presented one at a time and you are provided 1 minute to record each of your responses.
  • Second section, typed responses: 3 word-based and 5 video-based scenarios. For each scenario, 3 open-ended questions are presented together and you are provided a total of 5 minutes to respond to all 3 questions.
  • 90-110 minutes, with breaks, to complete.
  • You must reserve a specific date and time to take the Casper test. We recommend that you reserve your test at least 3 days in advance of your Casper test date to allow for time to prepare for the test by running through the system requirements check and taking the sample test. Check the Dates and fees page.
  • There is a test taking fee of $85.00, which includes distribution to 7 schools of your choice. There will be an $18.00 fee per additional distribution to the school(s) of your choice. All fees are final, non-refundable, and valid for the current admissions cycle.
  • Allow 2-3 weeks after you take your test for your scores to be distributed.

You will be responsible for securing access to a laptop or desktop computer with webcam and audio capabilities. You will require the following for both account creation and taking the test:

Working microphone

Reliable high-speed internet connection

Go to https://my.acuityinsights.app/dates-times to sign up for the Medicine test (CSP-10111 - U.S. Medicine), under your specific country (USA), and reserve a test using your AMCAS ID and a piece of government-issued photo ID. You will be provided with a limited number of testing dates and times based on the admissions timeline and requirements. Please note that these are the only testing dates available for your CASPer test, and you must select the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University for distribution before the posted Distribution Deadline. Likely, there will be no additional tests scheduled, but the most up to date information can be found by browsing Dates and Fees. Please use an email address that you check regularly; there may be updates to the test schedule.

Please direct any inquiries directly to Acuity Insights by using their chat function in the bottom right hand corner of your screen on the Acuity Insights website.

CASPer test results are valid for one admissions cycle. Applicants who have already taken the test in previous years will therefore be expected to re-take it.

Additional Information

Letters of Recommendations

All applicants are required to submit at least three, current letters of recommendation through AMCAS. The Admissions Committee will not review an applicant's file without having received all three current letters of recommendation. These can include letters from science professors or a Pre-Health Advisory committee (if applicable) and/or personal references. It is strongly recommended that one of the personal recommendations comes from a physician who can speak toward the student's clinical exposure/experience.

Clinical Exposure

This is a critical component of the application. The MCG Admissions Committee expects applicants to have experience shadowing physicians and/or volunteering in a clinical setting.

Technical Standards

Physicians and medical students must possess physical, cognitive, emotional, interpersonal, and communication skills to successfully complete their medical education and practice proficiently in medicine. These abilities and characteristics are defined as technical standards. In conjunction with academic standards established by the faculty of the Medical College of Georgia, these standards are required for admission, matriculation, continuation, and graduation. Delineation of technical standards is required for the accreditation of U.S. medical schools by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

Candidates for the M.D. degree must possess aptitude, abilities, and skills in observation; communication; motor function and coordination; intellectual abilities involving conceptualization, integration and quantitation; and behavioral and social skills. Students must personally demonstrate these technical standards in order to fulfill the essential course requirements of a general medical education as well as eventual practice. Reasonable accommodation is available to assist with a variety of disabilities and may be permitted for disabilities in certain areas. Under all circumstances, clerkship and pre-clerkship students should be able to perform in a reasonably independent manner. Therefore, third parties cannot be used to assist students in accomplishing curricular requirements in the five areas specified in the Technical Standards.

The Medical College of Georgia has developed technical standards to evaluate prospective students. These standards are guidelines and are subject to revision. For questions or more information, please contact the Office of Student Affairs.
