Flow Cytometry

The Georgia Cancer Center Flow Cytometry Resource is equipped with eight flow cytometers categorized into two types. The first type are analyzer flow cytometers that are typically operated by investigators themselves. The second type are cell sorter flow cytometers that are provided as a service to investigators.

For more information please go to the Flow and Mass section on the Shared Resources page.

Analyzer Flow Cytometers

The facility has a Cytek Biosciences 5-Laser Aurora Spectral Cytometer, one Agilent 5-laser 30-color Penteon, two Agilent 4-laser 25-color NovoCyte Quanteons and one 4-laser 14-color ThermoFisher Attune NxT.

Cytek Biosciences Aurora Spectral cytometer [5-laser, 40+ color system]

Cyrek Aurora 5-Laser Spectral Cytometer

With five lasers, three scattering channels, and 64 fluorescence channels, the Aurora can perform from simple to high complexity applications. A paradigm shifting optical design enables the use of a wide array of new fluorochrome combinations without reconfiguring your system for each application. The state-of-the-art optics and low-noise electronics provide excellent sensitivity and resolution.

Cell Sorter Flow Cytometers

There are two droplet cell sorters in the Flow Cytometry Facility, one manufactured by BD Biosciences, the FACSAria II SORP (Special Order Research Product) and one manufactured by ThermoFisher, the Bigfoot. There is also a user-operated microfluidic sorter from Miltenyi, the MACs Quant Tyto.

Miltenyi Tyto: microfluidic cell sorter

Microfluidic sorter - perfect for extremely sensitive samples or those requiring sterile sort conditions. This machine is user operated.

ThermoFisher Bigfoot Spectral and Conventional Cell Sorter [5-laser, 48 color and Spectral system]

The Bigfoot can physically sort up to 6 populations concurrently at a speed of up to 20,000 cells/sec and it is able to sort them into a variety of collection devices:

12 x 75 mm, 15mL and 50mL tubes
Multiwell plates
Microtubes
Microscope slides

It is a jet-in-air system contained within a biosafety cabinet (BSL2+), making it a good choice for continued cell culture/ single cell sorting for cloning

BD Biosciences FACSAria II SORP Cell Sorter [4-laser, 18-color system]

The BD Biosciences FACSCAria II SORP is equipped with 4-lasers and 18 fluorescence detectors. It can physically sort up to four populations concurrently and is able to sort them into a variety of collection devices including 5ml tubes, 15ml tubes and multiwell plates. It is located in a negative pressure suite (CN-4146C) and, with approval from the AU Biosafety Office, can accommodate BSL1 specimens.
