I treat complex spinal disorders (degenerative and neoplastic, adult and pediatric), cervical myelopathy, cranial and spinal neurotrauma and craniofacial disorders. Additional interests include neurosurgical resident/medical student education, medical instrumentation design/improvement.

Teaching Interests

I have been active in teaching neurosurgical residents and medical students as well as mentoring college and graduate-level students interested in the disciplines of medicine and neurosurgery. I am an active member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). I have lectured on multiple topics including minimization of complications in spinal surgery, adult and pediatric spinal imaging, mild traumatic brain injury / concussions, severe traumatic brain injury from accidental and nonaccidental trauma, craniosynostosis and neuroendoscopy.

Research Interests

I have been part of a team of neurosurgeons who created evidence-based guidelines for the treatment of pediatric hydrocephalus. These guidelines have been adopted by national neurosurgical and pediatric organizations. As director of the Craniofacial Center at Goryeb Children’s Hospital we maintained a longitudinal review of our operative and nonoperative treatments for plagiocephaly as well as evaluation of our open vs. endoscopic craniosynostosis repair.

I have pursued research into 1) quality metrics for cervical and lumbar spine surgery (to reduce infection, CSF leak and length of hospital stay), 2) active reduction of complications through standardization of processes and medical instrument design, 3) efficacy of flex-extension MRI in the evaluation and treatment of cervical spondylitic myelopathy, 4) automated assessment of cord contouring with cervical spondylitic myelopathy, 5) radiographic predictors of adjacent segment disease following cervical spine fusion, 6) minimally invasive tumor surgery and 7) evaluation of academic neurosurgical programs correlating faculty H-index to subspecialty.

I am currently pursuing clinical research with spinal neurosurgery patients as well as design and development of hospital equipment and neurosurgical operative instruments.
