Goals: To observe and practice anatomic pathology.
Objectives:At the end of the rotation, the student should be able to:
Learn anatomic pathology procedures and methods of basic diagnosis through rotations of surgical and autopsy division in the Pathology Department.
Activities:
Participate in routine microscopic sign out with faculty members including biopsies and gross surgical specimens.
Review cases with residents and attending pathologists at daily consensus meeting, interdepartmental tumor boards, departmental didactic conferences, and gross specimen and autopsy conferences.
Participate in the preparation of frozen sections for immediatediagnosis during intra operative consultations.
Observe and participate in the performance of postmortem examinations.
Assists housestaff to obtain case related clinical data and communication.
Lecture Hours: 4 weekly
Lab Hours: 40 weekly
Assessment: Evaluation performed on the following skills:
Assistance in the gross examination of surgical specimens.
Assistance in the performance of frozen sections.
Assistance in the performance of postmortem examinations. Case presentation.
Professionalism and Attendance
Note: An oral presentation to the Anatomic Pathology Faculty and Residents is necessary to qualify for a grade "A". The presentation should be a 20-30 minute presentation on an anatomic pathology topic, preferably related to a case that the student encountered during the rotation.
